We understand that in winter, when the temperature drops outside, it can be tempting to turn up the heat inside your home. However, before you reach for the thermostat have a look at these five easy and cost effective tips to reduce heat loss within your home.
1. Rearrange your furniture
It’s nice to have a change now and then. Rearranging your furniture is a good way to make sure you’re getting the most warmth out of your room. Avoid placing your sofa or chairs in front of a large window; the radiant heat loss from your body to the glass will make you feel cold. Try not to push your sofa up against a radiator too as it will absorb the heat.
2. Add layers
Rugs aren’t just an accessory to make your home look colourful and stylish. They are also great for trapping heat, which is good news because as much as 15% of the heat in a room can be lost through uninsulated ground floors**.
3. Seal any leaks
Check the seals around your doors and windows. If you can feel a draught you may want to get your hands on some weather stripping or a door draught excluder. These items can be bought from most good DIY shops and won’t break the bank.
4. Close doors
Sometimes it’s the simple solutions that are the most effective. Closing off unused rooms will help to keep the heat in the areas that matter and prevent cold air from moving freely around the rest of the house.
5. Foil it
It might sound a little bizarre, but putting tinfoil behind your radiators can help to reflect heat back into the room, and make sure it doesn’t escape through the walls. You can purchase special radiator foil, but good quality kitchen foil will also do the trick.
